The very charming and lovely Worli Koliwada Vailankanni...
The very charming and lovely Worli Koliwada Vailankanni Cross, located within five minutes walking distance from the historical Worli Fort is situated on the narrow Worli Koliwada Road leading up to the Fort. According to the local caretaker, Raju Worlikar, the Cross is reputed to be almost 100 years old, being erected in 1919 and has undergone major renovations in 1969 and 1995 (more or less as it is seen now) respectively. The Cross itself is made of beautiful shining black granite and placed on an octagonal white marble pedestal, with two niches on the front of the pedestal exclusively for lighting candles. The Cross is flanked by attractive posters on the sides and at the back. The poster at the back depicts a huge picture of Lord Jesus, with the words "JESUS LOVES YOU" printed on a picturesque backdrop. The poster on the left provides information along with relevant photographs, for the following five churches: St. Michael's Church, Mahim. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra. The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Manori. The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Borivali. The Church of Our Lady of Fatima, Karjat. A similar statue in white marble of Our Lady of Vailankanni, is placed on a pedestal in an attractive pentagonal wooden cabinet with a glass door, just next to the Cross. Celebrations for the annual feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni are held every year between 29th August & 8th September, in the form of special Novena prayers. All in all, one of the more attractive crosses in Worli Koliwada, this landmark is certainly worth a visit if you happen to be in the vicinity!!
